What is worry
Usually, the way we get into the problem gives us a clue as to how we can get out of the problem.
1. Worry ... how do we develop worry? by attaching ourselves to the result.
Please observe.
2. How do we attach ourselves to the result? By constantly meditating on the result.
do you see that ?
Constantly thinking "i would be wonderful if i get this result".
"I would be happy if i get it and miserable if i do not get it"
"I want this at any cost" and so on...
basing the identity of "I" on that result and constantly associating "I" or "my well being" with the result. Constant meditation on it.
do you observe this ? This is how we get "into" this trap. And then worry overtakes us.
So whats the way out ?
1. Changing the focus to the "Task" or "Present Task" . This is vital. Always, concentrate on the task, not the end.
If i am cleaning my house, how do i do it? Carefully, coz the means and the end are the same.
If my servant maid is doing the same thing, her mind is on money... the means and the end are different.
There is a lot of different. Swami Vivekananda ji calls this Slaves work.
The slave like working makes the work into a big burden. All the time, i want something else, but have to do something different. Thats a big burden. It causes lot of psychological problems. Also.
so shift attention to the means. Your objective should be to do the work better and straight. To do the work in the right way. Not the result. Meaning your attention should shift to the means from the end.
2. Understand that result is never in our hands.
We have a control over what action we take... never over the result. This is a law of Karma in our Scriptures. This law is very significant and scientific. One needs to carefully understand.
The right over action is there ... atlest to a degree. Result is never in our hands. Simple law. its not something u can do about it. just understand that this is the truth.
Four states of a car
1) The car remains parked in the garage with engine turned off - Neither the car is running, nor the engine, no wastage of fuel and no gain (distance traveled).
2) The engine is on and car is running on the road - fuel is burning but distance is being covered as well.
3) The car is parked with engine on - There is only wastage of fuel, no gain in terms of distance traveled.
4) The car is running with engine turned off (say on slopes etc) - No fuel is burnt, and yet there is only gain in terms of distance traveled.
Now compare these with the four states of human-beings:
(Analogy: 'working = distance traveled'; 'worrying = fuel burnt')
1) People who are careless - they neither worry, nor work. No fuel burnt, nothing gained.
2) People who work and also worry - this is the condition of most of us, we gain by working, and we also keep worrying about the end results, success and failure etc.
3) People who only worry, but don't work - they are so absorbed in their worries that they are unable to take any action. This is the worst one.
4) People who work, without worrying - these are the ones who make the most of their lives.
If you work, then you will surely get the results irrespective of whether you worry or not. But if you only worry and don't work, then you will never gain anything. Just do your duties to your best without worrying about the outcomes, and instant peace will follow. This is the essence teaching of "KarmaYoga" of Gita - "you are entitled only to actions, not to their results, so don't consider yourself to be cause of results, and also do not give up your dutiful actions".
Lastly, read the Bhagavad Gita, it is THE GREATEST philosophy and teaching ever produced. Even suicidal cases of depression have been treated (I have witnessed it) with just understanding the Gita. Your worries wont last long if you study the Gita.
The whole theory of Karma is very very scientific. The point is ... any result comes when the time is ripe.
Someone is rich say, he hits his driver. Being rich and powerful, the driver has no alternative but to bear the beating. But the action of this rich man is not lost. it accumulates in the back log. And he gets it when the time is ripe. Right now, coz of his riches and position ... the driver's retort cannot take place. The time is not ripe right now. But every action should have a result. So this action accumulates in his backlog ... that will take its shape when time is ripe.
Here is a simple example. Two students are preparing for an exam.
A and B, are their names say.
A prepares hard. But fails.
B did not prepare much, but passed.
if you explore a little ... you find that B had prepared a lot to understand that subject in his earlier classes, while A was actually wasting his time.
After a few years, A and C write the test again. This time, A passes with lesser effort!!
Results come when the time is ripe.
We do not know what results are in our backlog and which one will take shape now! All we know is we can act in a certain way. No control over the result what so ever.
This understanding will bring about some calmness... coz the attention is already shifted towards the action :).
